ECO Superstar

Posted on May 20, 2010 in Uncategorized

It appeared, to the casual observer, last Thursday, that there was a lot of cloak and dagger business going on with two camera people and another person, who looked a little like Wolverine holding a microphone, creeping around the paths at Helena College. The mystery was solved at the end of 7S’ homeroom, when all the departing students were confronted by Wolverine, himself, who asked to speak to Nate Wood. He soon revealed that Nate had been one of two finalists selected to take up the Eco Challenge with the members of his homeroom and all the Helena College community.
ECO Superstar was a brand new search to find a young environmental warrior with enough rock star ‘chutzpah’ to make the people of Perth get off their backsides and make a difference. The ECO Superstar 2010 will not only care about climate change but they’ll have what it takes to make their mates sit up and say… ‘Wow!’

Eco Superstar is based around a unique website – www.ecosuperstar.com.au <http://www.ecosuperstar.com.au/>  - and a film is being made to document the project. Think Australian Idol… but we save trees!
The competition was open only to high school students in the Eastern region of Perth. It was funded by the Australian government through the Perth Solar City program and is being creatively masterminded and produced by Prospero Productions in Fremantle.
It all started when John Robertson, the ECO Superstar host, challenged the students of Helena College, Mundaring Christian College, Morley Senior High School and La Salle College to enter the competition by making a 2 minute video audition. What was at stake? Some fantastic prizes – a movie making kit with Apple MacBook Pro, iPhone, edit software and DVD camcorder. For some students making their ECO Superstar audition was built into their media classes whilst others worked on their films at home.

The entries really blew everyone away! The video auditions were online at www.ecosuperstar.com.au <http://www.ecosuperstar.com.au> for all to watch, rate and comment on. The ECO Coach, Giovanna Fasenelli, was also on hand – virtually and in person – to give advice and monitor the entries. The auditions that received the highest votes were put before a panel of judges to decide who would make it through to the ECO Superstar final challenge.
It was a very tough decision but it was finally announced that Nate Wood from Helena College and Sarah, from Mundaring Christian College, were the pick of the crop and they made it through to the ECO Superstar final. They have now been challenged to:

  • Make their school and home life more environmentally friendly
  • Reduce the energy use in their school and
  • Hold an ECO Event

They are going to need guts, charisma and a whole heap of love for the environment! The Eco Superstar crew will be behind them every step of the way – filming their challenges and successes and supporting their work. All the latest on how Nate and Sarah are getting on can be found at www.ecosuperstar.com.au <http://www.ecosuperstar.com.au>  - check it out!

‘Snapshots from Home’ – Year 11 drama production

Congratulations to the cast and crew on fantastic Year 11 drama production of Snapshots from Home. Written by Margery Forde, this play explored the tales of the families left at home during World War II. Set in suburban Queensland, Snapshots from Home was a poignant retrospective based on real life recollections and full of sadness, rejoicing, loss, romance, and simply soldiering on! Along with all the classic old songs, and the occasional jitterbug, each actor played a multitude of characters in different scenes.

Many thanks to Jacqui McIroy, Amanda Ash, Aaron Stirk, Tom Belger, Julie Carlton, Karen Lawson, Annette Bottrell, the P&F, and many others for their invaluable contributions to this production.
