Orienteering

Helena College was represented by three students at the WA  School Orienteering Championships at Fred Jacoby Park on 16 June. Ruth Dowson was second in the girls 11 years age group, Imogen Walters was second in the girls 12 years age group and Bill Mann was first in the boys 16 and over category. With 900 students from all over the state at the event this was a wonderful effort both individually and for the school. Congratulations to all three students!

Zumba @ Helena

Congratulations to the Student Council and in particular to Year 12 student, Charis Waugh, organiser, for a fantastic fundraising event for the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. Over 100 students, staff and parents turned out to Zumba @ Helena, raising over $1000! Well done.

Zen Do Kai news

At the State Gradings for Zen Do Kai on the weekend Brianna Pannekoek attempted her Junior Black Belt. Brianna did so well throughout the grading and especially Kickboxing 10 rounds against adults that she was given a Senior Black Belt! Others to do well on the day were:

Aleisha Howard – Brown Thai singlet
Lewis Kinnear – Green Singlet
James Challis – Blue Singlet.
2 dads also passed their kickboxing levels.

New Senior School Principal announced

Council is very pleased to announce that Mr Ian Lyons has been appointed the new Principal of Helena College Senior School, commencing in Term Four, 2010.

From a field of excellent applicants for the position of Principal, Mr Lyons fulfilled all the criteria we sought, and we are confident that he will be a worthy successor to Mr John Allen-Williams. Of course, Ian Lyons is well known to all of us as a parent, teacher and Deputy Principal at Helena College.

Ian Lyons is well qualified to lead Helena College Senior School into the next exciting stage of its development. With a Diploma of Engineering, a Diploma in Education and a Masters of Education in Administration, Ian has over 34 years’ experience as an exceptional teacher, administrator and leader in education.   He brings a depth of knowledge and experience to the role of Principal and has served the College community with exemplary dedication, commitment and enthusiasm over the past 16 years in the roles of Curriculum Coordinator, Director of Upper School, Acting Principal and Deputy Principal.

Ian brings knowledge, experience, energy, vision and leadership potential to successfully carry out the role of Principal within Helena College’s unique context, Bringing out the Best for all in our College community.

Congratulations to Mr Lyons.  We look forward to the future years at Helena College with excitement.

Parents as Partners @ Helena

Parents as Partners @ Helena is a support / skills / business network for the College.

The information collected will create a database for the purposes of

  • Possible work experience and Workplace Learning placements for students
  • Identification of possible student mentors for the International Baccalaureate personal project, which will commence with 90 Year 9 students in 2011

We would also like to support your businesses, wherever possible, in the provision of services to the College.
