Announcement from Council

Dear parents and friends of Helena College

Today I am pleased to present to you a new vision, mission and values set for Helena College and a strategic plan that will guide the Council and leadership teams over the next three years. This now forms part of our website homepage (Click here > ) and the strategic plan has been published. (Click here to go to the Governance page to download >)

These are formed from your words, your thoughts and your suggestions gathered and evaluated from surveys and workshops.

The focus is firmly placed on working together as a community to educate and inspire our students to be the best they can be by developing their confidence, ability and passion to achieve their goals and by providing a balanced focus on whole child development.

The strategic plan maintains key elements of what is important from our historic foundations and culture while also providing fresh directions to position Helena for the future. The strategic priorities detailed in the plan will continue to drive change and performance improvement both within the school executive teams and Council.  I am confident that there is capability within to ensure they are achieved.

The College’s journey down the Yellow Brick Road started at the end of 2011 when parents, staff, students and Council members were invited to provide feedback on the College and our strategic directions for the future via online surveys.

Further consultation took place during a series of workshops in term one 2012, which involved representatives from across our community actively contributing to define a picture of the future for the College and its students and build on the insights gathered from the surveys.

Following those workshops Council and members of the Senior Executive teams at each campus worked together to formulate a new vision mission and values statement as part of the strategic plan for 2012-2015.

On behalf of Council, I thank you for your support, comments, feedback and participation in the College’s Yellow Brick Road journey to develop a strategic plan for the next three years. The Senior School Principal, Head of Junior School and staff at each campus will be working together to bring these strategic directions to fruition.

There are exciting times ahead for the College.

Regards

Peter Hall, Chair of Council

Annual Giving 2012

Dear parents, friends, staff and Old Helenians

The Annual Giving programme started off small in 2007 and the concept of giving is continuing to grow in our community. Parents, staff and Old Helenians are encouraged to give generously, within your personal capacity for giving, in the spirit of philanthropy. All donations over $2 are tax deductible and whether your gift is large or small it will be greatly appreciated.

Your contributions will go directly towards teaching and learning projects that require immediate funding and assist with the provision of valuable and enduring items for the enhancement of the College at both the Junior and Senior School campuses.  Our students continue to benefit from previous years’ purchases and projects.

Helena College Library Fund

Gifts to the library fund ensure that the libraries at each campus have access to new resources – books, magazines and online resources. In 2012 a new library administration system will be installed allowing for a shared library online catalogue resource sharing across both schools.

Helena College Special Education Fund

Gifts and donations for the Special Education Fund enable the College to support our students through the provision of a Special Education Assistant at the Senior School and the Enrichment programme at the Junior School. In 2012-2013 a new enrichment programme is also planned for the Senior School.

Helena College Building Fund

A gift to the Building Fund allows the College to develop and renew its facilities to keep abreast of the latest teaching and learning technologies. It is important to our students to be able to learn in the best possible facilities.

Building projects currently being planned include refurbishment of classrooms at each campus, new classrooms at the Senior School, completion and resourcing of the new Junior School buildings, upgrading the science and home economics facilities and installing covered, tiered seating on the oval.

College Council works with the management teams to Bring out the best together at both campuses and this Annual Giving opportunity gives the wider College community chance to contribute to the process.

On behalf of Council I invite you to support the

• Helena College Library Fund

• Helena College Special Education Fund

• Helena College Building Fund

through the gift of a tax deductible donation.

All donations over $2.00 to the College funds are fully tax deductible.

The Building, Special Education and Library Funds are three ways for members of our community to give additional financial support to the College. We invite you to help make a difference by donating towards the 2012 Annual Giving programme. Your gift, whatever the amount, is appreciated and will be used to benefit all students, both current and future students.

College Council news

Council Corner

Daphne Vose

Daphne Vose

Earlier this year, we were very sorry to receive the resignation from Helena College Council of our wonderful chairperson, Daphne Vose. Daphne was a strong supporter of the College during the time her son Jonathon (Year 12 ‘95) and daughter Kathleen (Year 12 ’97) were students here.  In 1995-1996 she was President of the Senior School P&F and in 1997 was invited to join the Helena College Council. Even though her children were no longer students she remained connected to our community as a very committed and valuable member of Council. In 2003 she was elected as Chairperson and held that position until she retired early in 2011.

Her expertise as a teacher, director and parent was always beneficial to the College and her commitment, plus generosity with time, was highly valued. Many students and parents will remember her thoughtful and sincere speeches which were made on Awards Nights. Her overall knowledge of the College, its ethos, values and procedures were obvious when Council decisions were being made that would affect students, staff and parents. Although compassionate and caring, she had the strength to lead Council members into decision making when it was difficult. Her dignity, cheerful manner and integrity helped to build a strong rapport amongst Council members and staff with whom she became involved.

All Council members, past and present, express their deep gratitude for her help and influence as Chair of Council. We look forward to ‘catching up’ with Daphne at future College events.

At the recently held College Council’s Annual General Meeting a new Chair of Council was elected.

Peter Hall, Chair of Council

The College Council wishes to announce that Mr Peter Hall is the new Chair of Council. On behalf of the College community we congratulate Peter and look forward to an exciting future for Helena College.

Peter Hall

Peter and his wife, Nicola, immigrated to Western Australia from the United Kingdom in 2005, with their two children. The family currently resides in Mundaring and the children attend Helena College Senior School, with Lawrence in Year 12, and Maddy in Year 9. Peter’s wife, Nicky, is an Helena College staff member, working across both Junior and Senior Schools in various administration roles.

Peter has always been an active and interested parent, initially attending P&F meetings, participating in many busy bees, assisting with a number of International Malam events and has volunteered his time and professional expertise on the College Council for a number of years, including  Chairing the Industrial Communications Group for the past two years.

Peter has brought a broad skill base to his role on Council. Peter’s career path has involved years of service in the Navy, serving in the Falklands Islands during the conflict, civil engineering, and senior management positions.

In addition to being a dedicated family man, Peter’s other interests are based around his travelling commitments and include running, boating, and landscaping.
