This week I gave a demonstration of the College’s new online business directory to the parents at the Junior School P&F and spoke about it with the parents of the Senior School P&F. So far we have 38 advertisers on the directory but we need your support to build it and make it grow. We want it to be of benefit to our community – parents, students, Old Helenians, staff and Friends of Helena (ie hills businesses). Become an advertiser and/or use it – support members of our community. It is so easy to use and set up your advert. Two additional new categories just added are buy and sell CLASSIFIEDS -  uniforms and CLASSIFIEDS – general items.

There are three levels of adverts – free line listings, display adverts ($75 per year), and feature adverts ($200 per year). Advertisers can log in any time to update their ads.

2015 is the 100^th year anniversary of the ANZAC troops’ landing in Gallipoli. The Humanities department is considering taking a group of interested students to Gallipoli, as well as visiting other battle sites in France and Belgium. At this stage we are looking at expressions of interest for such a trip and to determine if it would be a viable undertaking. The trip will be open to students who will be in Years 9, 10, 11 or 12 in 2015. An approximate cost of around six thousand dollars has been estimated but costs may, and probably will vary, depending on numbers and the itinerary. If you think your son or daughter would be interested in attending this event it will be necessary to register with Mr David Bannister (History teacher) or Ms Diane Parker (Politics and Law teacher)

The inaugural Helena talent show was introduced by the Student Council in 2012 and this year’s show promises to be even bigger and more amazing!. Auditions took place last term. The range of talent includes: dancers, singers, pianists, bands, electronic music DJs, circus skills and much more. Tickets are limited so be quick!

I first heard about the bombings at the Boston Marathon during class at school. I know that many terrible things happen around the world but I couldn’t stop thinking about the bombing. I decided that I needed to do something. With the support of my family and my Physical Education teacher at school, Mr Kendall, I put forward a plan to fundraise to help the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

On Saturday, 18 May 2013, myself and 9 other runners from my Year 7 class at school, will run the 42.195 kilometres that is traditionally run by the Boston Marathon participants. We will each run 4 kilometres on the day, and all run the final 2 kilometres together. What we want to do is finish the Boston Marathon for those who couldn’t.

We will begin running at 11.30am in the morning and do laps around the Darlington Oval until we have finished the marathon kilometres. We have received approval from the Shire to run a sausage sizzle on the day so please come down to the oval to cheer us on. We will draw a raffle on the day too.

I am seeking sponsorship in any way you can help. We aim to raise $1000 to donate to the One Fund Boston charity that will help the victims of the Boston bombings and their families. You can read more about what One Fund Boston does at their website. If you can help with a cash donation, large or small, my family and I can come and collect from you or you can direct deposit into our Bendigo Bank account. The Bendigo Bank has offered to direct deposit any donations to One Fund Boston for us. You can also drop donations into Helena College Senior School administration, The Pines store in Darlington or Earnshaws Real Estate (look for the purple tins!)
