Canteen @ Helena

Traffic Light SystemThe College canteens run on a non-profit basis. The Junior School canteen, The Gum Leaf Café, is staffed by a Canteen Manager, Mrs Frankie Wallace. The Senior School canteen is staffed by a Canteen Manager, Mrs Annette Bottrell and Canteen Assistant, Mrs Lea Gooch. Both canteens can only operate with the generous assistance of parent volunteers.

The school canteen is an integral part of the learning environment, and as such operates in a manner that supports the health messages of curriculum. Childhood and adolescence is an important period of growth and development and for these to occur optimally, adequate energy and nutrients must be consumed. The canteen menus are consistent with the recommended nutritional guidelines for WA school canteens. Helena College utilises the ‘traffic light’ system of menu planning and food categorisation to identify and promote foods and drinks supplied to our students and staff. Under the traffic light system, food and drinks sold are classified into categories based on their nutritional value, energy density and levels of saturated fat, added sugar, salt and fibre.

Canteen menus and rosters

The majority of daily menu choices available at the College canteens are based on the core food groups and are predominantly classified as ‘Green’. These may be supplemented by convenience products which may be classified as either ‘Green or Amber’. No items classified as ‘Red’ are sold at either canteen.
