Both programmes enrich the academic and personal development of each student by catering for their individual strengths and learning preferences. The IB is an inquiry-based approach that helps students reach a deeper level of understanding of the content in the Australian Curriculum. By the time our students undertake the Western Australian Certificate of Education in Years 11-12, they have developed critical and creative thinking skills that serve them well for study and for life.
IB Programmes equip our students to flourish in a constantly changing world, by developing the ten essential attributes – Balanced, Caring, Communicators, Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Open-minded, Principled, Reflective, Risk-takers, Thinkers – of the IB learner profile.
Primary Years Programme
The PYP develops each child’s capacity for lifelong, independent learning, with an emphasis on global thinking, research skills and strong personal values. The core learning of the Australian Curriculum is addressed through a series of investigations into big ideas such as ‘Who are we?’, ‘Where we are in place and time’, ‘How we express ourselves’, How the world works’, ‘How we organise ourselves’ and ‘Sharing the Planet’. These investigations are trans-disciplinary, meaning that they focus on issues that go across subject areas.
The PYP programme strengthens each child’s academic, social and emotional development through the development of knowledge, concepts, skills and attitudes that children will need for successful lives beyond the classroom.
Middle Years Programme
Like the PYP, the MYP is an inquiry-based framework for learning the essential content of the Australian Curriculum. The focus is less on simply transmitting knowledge and more on developing young people as active learners, creative and critical thinkers.
From Years 6-9, the programme encourages students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the world at large, with a particular emphasis on the global nature of today’s society. In Year 9, students work on a Community Project, either individually or in groups, to showcase what they have learned through the four years of the MYP. The Community Project requires the students to set a meaningful and challenging goal that allows them to develop an advanced skill set, as well as have a significant benefit to a nominated community.
