Helena Community

At Helena College we actively seek ways to enhance student learning and wellbeing by partnering with parents and families, other education and training institutions, local businesses and community organisations.

Some of the partnerships include:

  • Alternatives to Violence Project – Years 4-5 students participate in workshops run by trained community facilitators
  • Friends of Darlington Station – students worked with this volunteer group to plant trees throughout the Waabiny Hill re-development project
  • Men’s Shed Mundaring – volunteers sculpted a jarrah goanna for Waabiny Hill
  • South West Noongar Land and Sea Council – supported the use of Noongar Language in the naming of Waabiny Hill
  • Darlington Arts Festival – students make a significant contribution to this iconic community event, as performers, visual artists and volunteers at fundraising stalls
  • Helena parents make a valued contribution to school and community life through our active and enthusiastic Parents’ and Friends’ Association, as well as through volunteering to help with classroom activities, excursions and special events.

One community partnership project was the construction of a Memorial Garden, to honour the sacrifice by Australia’s servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peaceful operations. The Darlington Campus received a government grant under the Saluting their Service Commemorations Programme, thanks to the efforts of teacher Robin Hunt and parent Jodie Watts. The Memorial Garden was officially opened in 2015 by one of our alumni, Flight Lieutenant Christopher McLoughlin.

The garden is adjacent to Helena House Hall, a purpose built facility used for classes in art, cooking and dance as well as assemblies and other presentations. The hall is available for hire and is equipped with state of the art audiovisual equipment thanks to a Lottery West grant.
