As we come to the end of Semester One, I would like to thank our students, staff and families for the contribution they have made to another successful semester at Helena College. It has been a busy first half of the year, with students involved in a wide range of academic, sporting, cultural and outdoor learning opportunities. I have been impressed by the way our students have approached these experiences and by the support they continue to show one another.
This week, families will receive their children's Semester One reports. These reports provide an overview of each student's progress and achievement across the semester and are an important part of the partnership between home and school. I encourage parents and carers to take the time to discuss the reports with their child, recognising their achievements while also identifying areas for continued improvement. If you have questions or would like any additional information about your child's progress, I encourage you to contact their teachers. We value these conversations and appreciate the opportunity to work together to support every student's learning.
As part of our College Master Plan, we have continued to improve our facilities across both campuses throughout Semester One. This year, we completed the new Early Childhood playground and upgrades to the Year 5 amphitheatre. During Semester Two, work will continue with improvements to the Year 4 corridor area and additional seating near the outdoor basketball courts at the Senior School.
We are also looking forward to construction commencing on a major new two-storey building at the Senior School. This building will provide additional classrooms and a much-needed multipurpose space that will greatly enhance teaching, learning and College events. I would like to thank the College Council for its continued support of the Strategic Plan and its commitment to these important projects. Further information about this project will be shared with our community later this year.
At the end of each semester, we also farewell a number of families who are leaving Helena College. We thank them for the contribution they have made to our community and wish them every success and happiness in the future.

Keys for Life: Teaching Safer Driving for our Year 10s
With many of our Year 10s approaching the time in their lives where they will be getting their learner’s permit, keeping our students safe on the road is an important priority.
For many years the Health and PE department at Helena College has run the Keys for Life driver education program as part of the Year 10 Health curriculum. Designed specifically for young drivers and their families, Keys for Life combines evidence-based instruction, practical skills, and ongoing support to help new drivers build confidence while reducing risky behaviours behind the wheel.
Throughout the term all year 10s have covered the following topics as part of the program:
Classroom lessons that cover hazard perception, speed management, fatigue, distraction (including mobile phone use), and the effects of alcohol and drugs.
Practical driving strategies parents and supervisors can use when coaching learner drivers.
Resources and checklists to track progress and reinforce safe habits during supervised driving hours.
Community-focused initiatives and reinforcement campaigns to keep road safety visible.
Why it matters
Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death and injury for teenagers. Research shows that targeted education programs like Keys for Life reduce risky driving behaviors, improve hazard recognition, and increase the likelihood that young drivers adopt safer habits long-term. By educating both teens and their supervising drivers, the program helps create consistent expectations and safer learning environments.
Keys for Life equips our young drivers with the knowledge, practical skills, and family support they need to stay safe on the road. Those year 10s that have successfully completed all components of the Keys for Life Program will receive their certificates soon. This certificate allows them to get their Learner’s permit once they reach 16 years of age.

Student Reports, Work Sample Folders and ELC Portfolios provide valuable insight into each child's educational journey. Together, they showcase achievements, highlight growth and celebrate the effort invested throughout the semester.
When these are shared with families on Friday, we encourage you to spend some time exploring them together with your child(ren). Recognising successes, discussing areas for continued growth and setting goals for the months ahead are important ways to support ongoing development and encourage meaningful reflection. These conversations strengthen the home-school partnership while empowering students to take increasing ownership of their learning.

Thank you to all students who were able to join us for last week's Junior School Disco. Helena House Hall was transformed into a vibrant and colourful celebration, with students embracing the occasion in a wonderful array of fluro / creative costumes.
The disco remains a much-loved Junior School tradition and a joyful way to celebrate the conclusion of a busy and successful first semester. It was fantastic to see so many students enjoying the event with their friends - creating joyful memories!

We are delighted to announce that Mr Daniel Griffiths will be joining the Junior School as our Physical Education Teacher at the commencement of Term Three.
Daniel brings a wealth of teaching experience, having worked across a range of schools in both Australia and overseas, including Guildford Grammar School and Ellenbrook Christian College. Through these roles, he has worked with students and families from a wide variety of backgrounds and is very much looking forward to becoming part of the Helena College community.

What a big Term Two it has been in Upper School
Thank you, students, for all your efforts throughout the term. Students across Years 10 – 12 have been busy doing, in no particular order, ESTs, work placements, exams, guest speaker seminars, student leadership meetings, excursions, expeditions, NIAS competitions and carnivals, ACC competitions, production rehearsals, ensemble rehearsals, our Music Carnival, the Winter Music Concert, drama performances, Art Club, Homework Club, academic support sessions, a Titrations competition, two casual dress days, scholarship applications, assemblies, languages enrichment activities, Anzac Day commemorations, DJing at the Middle School Social, pre-camp meetings, a camp, PERMAH activities, campus clean-ups, tonight’s Senior Ball at Fraser’s in Kings Park and the Ski Trip departs for Falls Creek on Saturday.
I acknowledge that although these events are organised and run by staff, the support, encouragement, and taxi services provided by our families enable us to continue running activities that enrich the school experience for our students.
If you’re looking for something to do and/or feel brave, I encourage you to take this opportunity to review the upcoming Careers events outlined below and start the post-school destination conversation with your child. These conversations can be challenging, but are also eye-opening and ultimately rewarding.
With all that has happened this term, the upcoming break has been well-earned. Rest assured that there will be plenty happening when we return for Term Three. Until then, I hope all students, families, and staff enjoy the opportunity to rest.

Year 12 TISC Application Opening Date and Early Offers For 2027 University Admission
Applications through TISC for Semester 1 2027 admission opened on Tuesday 2 June 2026.
Students applying through TISC will automatically be considered for an early offer for their first preference if that course makes early offers. There is no need to complete any separate or additional procedures to be considered for early offers.
There will be two Year 12 Early Offer rounds this year. The first early offer round will be released on Monday, 5 October 2026, and the second and final early offer round will be released on Wednesday, 2 December.
Uniform Reminder
College Sports Jacket Please remember that the College Sports Jacket is not part of the School Uniform. It is part of the Sports Uniform and House Uniform and can be worn during Physical Education classes, House-based activities, and Interschool sporting events. With the days now cold and wet, it’s a timely reminder to get a College jumper or a soft-shell jacket to prepare for the cooler months that still lie ahead.
Remember that students must wear acceptable black leather school shoes before you head out to the EOFY mid-year sales. Our Uniform Policy states that the College expects all students to develop a high standard of dress. Please note that neither the Vans® style black leather nor canvas shoe, the Nike Air Force 1, Doc Martin Boots, nor a Mary Jane style shoe meets the high standard of dress expected by the College. Please keep this in mind when purchasing school footwear for the upcoming holiday break.

Year 10 students will soon make course choices for their 2027 Year 11 studies. In preparation, Year 10 students and their parents/ guardians are strongly encouraged to attend this presentation. During the evening, information will be shared regarding the subject selection process and the implications for course choices in Years 11 and 12, as well as post-school pathways.
Unless otherwise advised, the evening will take place in the GFC Gymnasium. Please remember to dress warmly. Please bring your Year 10 child with you.
Years 11 and 12 Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences

In response to parent feedback from the last survey, we have improved College communications with families about their child’s achievement. In the Middle School, for example, we have held our Meet the Teacher Evening and introduced Rubrics to remove written report comments on Middle School Reports.
To further improve our communications with families about their child’s achievement, we will hold a second Years 11 and 12 Parent-Student-Teacher Conference Evening. While the event is slightly shorter than the one held in March, it will follow a similar format. We will open interviews from 2.30 pm, and the last interview time that can be booked will be at 5.55 pm to ensure the night finishes at 6.00 pm.
The evening will give families of Year 12 students the chance to speak with teachers as their child begins their final term of formal schooling, and also provide Year 11 families with an opportunity to discuss progress and ongoing course selections.
Interviews will be FIVE minutes in duration. Students are strongly encouraged to attend the interview.
Please note that students will not be released early from class to attend interviews before 3.15 pm.
Interview times must be booked through the Parent Lounge, which will be open from 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, 23 July. A booking reminder will be sent in the What’s On message on Friday, 17 July. Those who do not book interview times are unlikely to be able to see the teachers on the night. However, they are welcome to email any teacher to organise an alternative date and time if necessary.
Year 10 End-of-Year Celebration Day
Date: Friday 4 December 2026.
This date marks the last day of Year 10 for 2026 and will incorporate some House-based challenges at school, morning tea, bus transfers to and from Point Fraser, a three-hour River Cruise and lunch.

Year 11 Return of Results Day
Date: Friday 4 December 2026
The school day will start with Homeroom at 8.40 am, and students will follow an amended timetable for the day via my.helena. Attendance is compulsory for all Year 11 students, and they are to wear their school uniform.
The day allows them to check their Semester Two exam and overall year results and grades before heading off on their well-deserved holiday. Once students have signed off their results, marks and grades will be uploaded to the School Curriculum and Standards Authority.
Year 11 students will need to bring a day pack, a pen, and their laptop so they can access class resources on the day and follow their amended timetable. They will have access to their locker. The Canteen will be open.

2026 SkillsWest Careers and Employment Expo
Our Year 12 General Pathway students will attend the SkillsWest Expo on Friday 24 July. The Expo will host over 160 organisations, including TAFE colleges, universities, the Australian Defence Force, mining and manufacturing companies, tourism and hospitality services, and employment services.

Friday July 10 Flight Lab with Squadrone: Drones, Code, Safety and Mission Design
In collaboration with Squadrone, ECU School of Science is excited to offer a special hands-on drone coding workshop for secondary students. Learn how drones work, explore basic Python programming logic and use code to design and test drone flight paths. You’ll also explore real-world considerations around drone technology, including safety, responsible use, spatial awareness, connected devices and basic security thinking.
ECU’s School of Science invites you to explore network vulnerabilities and network security. This workshop for high school students and teachers will look at the vulnerability in digital and communication networks encountered in everyday life through a micro: bit environment. Figure out ways to keep your micro: bit protected from threats.

This ECU School of Science workshop for secondary students offers a hands-on opportunity to step into the world of security and intelligence. The 2027 Veterinary Medicine Admissions Guide is now available and all applicants should review it before applying. 2026 Year 10 Information Handbook Out
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority say what to do to achieve the WA Certificate of Education (WACE). What they say defines what subjects you should take in Year 11 and 12. There are changes to WACE completion in 2028 that will impact on the achievement pathway for current Year 10s. Teachers and counsellors at your school will have up-to-date information on the WACE requirements currently in place.
Learn to become proficient using Apple tools to develop your ideas and solutions. Anyone aged 16+ can enrol in the FREE Apple Foundation Program. Students use Apple technology to work in small teams to generate solutions to challenges. You can do it in schools or as a three-week intensive program for four hours a day. Students will enjoy an engaging exploration of the campus as part of their Orientation Day in November. As part of Orientation Day, there will be a Parent Session that will provide comprehensive information on what to expect in Year 6, and cover topics such as laptops, learning areas and the timetable. Year 5 families can expect to receive information about Orientation Day early in Term Three.
The tour on 23 July will provide a broad introduction to Senior School and its facilities, and is aimed at current Year 4 and 5 parents and carers who may be unfamiliar with the Glen Forrest Campus. Attendance is optional.

WA Student Assistance Payment
The WA Student Assistance Payment helps parents and carers with cost-of-living pressures associated with sending their children to school.
All Western Australian school students in Kindergarten to Year 12, with a valid WA student number, are eligible for this cost-of-living payment.You can claim $250 for each secondary student and $150 for students attending primary school or Kindergarten. The payment will be available through the ServiceWA app, with parents and carers encouraged to set up or update their ServiceWA account and have an active Digital ID.
Claims open on Monday 20 July 2026 and must be received by Friday 25 September 2026.
Where to find the WA Student Number
Your child’s WA Student Number (WASN) is available in my.helena, however it is labelled as ‘Studies Code’. To find it, simply click/tap on your child’s photo in my.helena. This will bring up a new screen with the relevant information. Please use the longer Studies Code and not the six-digit Student ID number.

The Glen Forrest Campus (Years 6 to 12) photo days are scheduled for Tuesday 21 July and Wednesday 22 July (Week One of Term Three).

IPSHA Cross Country Success
Selected students in Years 3 to 6 recently represented Helena College at the IPSHA Cross Country. A competitive event on a well designed course. They run 1.5km for Year 3 and 4 and 2.5km for Year 5 and 6.
The day begun with heavy rain clouds and a wet outlook but luckily, the weather cleared for a crisp dry run. Our students performed brilliantly, they showed true spirit and determination in their events and supported each other superbly.
Notable finishes include:
Harry K in Year 3 who finished 3rd, timing 6.20 minutes for 1.5km
Oliver A also in Year 3 came 13th running 6.39 minutes
Milly W in Year 3 came 14th, with a time of 7.20 minutes
In Year 4, Grace C came 12th, timing 7.03 minutes,
James F came 31st with 6.41 minutes
Arkie B in Year 5 came 9th, covering 2.5km in 12.00 minutes
Isobel C came 12th, timing 12.12 minutes
Lucas H in Year 5 came 39th with a time of 12.07 minutes.
In Year 6, Lorenzo C ran a great race, finishing 5th, timing 10.07
Megan T came 18th, timing 12.17 minutes

Term Two School Sport
It has been another huge term of interschool sport in Term Two, with students representing the College across a wide range of competitions. From the Senior Netball Carnival and ACC Interschool Cross Country to the NIAS Senior Basketball & Soccer Carnival and the Year 6 Basketball Slam Series. Our students demonstrated outstanding skill, determination and teamwork. Most importantly, they displayed exceptional sportsmanship and represented the College with pride both on and off the field.

ACC Interschool Cross Country
Our students represented Helena with great determination at the ACC Interschool Cross Country Carnival in Week 6, which celebrated 60 years of competition this year. Racing against a strong field of athletes across nearly 80 schools, every student gave it everything they had and demonstrated outstanding perseverance over the 4 km course at Perry Lakes Reserve.
A special congratulations must go to our Year 10 Girls squad, who achieved exceptional individual results in a highly competitive field of more than 330 athletes. The girls placed:

15th - Charlotte H
27th – Sian T
Chloe F (Year 7) also finished in 26th place, out of a field of 370+ athletes, another outstanding individual result.

ACC Senior Netball Championship
Our netball team had an absolute blast at the ACC Netball competition, getting to verse a variety of teams filled with new and recognisable faces. With the help of Mrs Ve Smith as such a supportive and knowledgeable coach, and with Ms Lewis’s joyful encouragement, we had such a fun time pushing ourselves to get a few wins against some tough competition, coming out with two wins and four losses. A highlight was being able to play at the Gold Netball centre courts, as well as escaping any rough weather (It was almost too warm!)

NIAS Senior Basketball & Soccer Carnival
The NIAS Carnival was a great experience for my team and I to compete against local schools by coming together and mixing our athletic abilities to come out as 2nd overall. The lead up to the carnival was exciting for the Year 11’s as we had just finished two weeks of exams sitting for hours missing out on physical activities. The Carnival day not only allowed the Year 11s and 10s to come together but it was a great way to move our bodies and clear the head, by playing football on a clear, warm, sunny day. Overall, the Carnival day was supportive, mind settling, and I would recommend it for all younger years to come.

At the NIAS Senior Boys Basketball tournament the Helena College team showed determination and great teamwork throughout the day. The team played in four games, finishing with an impressive 3-1 record. Unfortunately we didn’t come out on top but we played a great brand of basketball and everybody had a great time. All players contributed greatly to the team's success throughout the day and did a superb job. The team would like to thank Mr Diaz and Mr Waterhouse for coaching and helping throughout the day and making sure everything ran smoothly and that we all had a great experience.

Year 6 Basketball School Slam Series
Our Year 6 students recently represented the College with pride at the Basketball Slam Series Carnival, with two boys' teams and two girls' teams competing against schools from across the region.
The standard of competition was exceptionally high, providing our students with a fantastic opportunity to challenge themselves, develop their skills, and experience competitive basketball. Throughout the day, every student demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, showing respect for teammates, opponents, officials, and coaches. Their positive attitudes, teamwork, and encouragement of one another were a credit to both themselves and the College.
Congratulations to all of our Year 6 players for the enthusiasm, resilience, and character they displayed. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented our school both on and off the court.
Year 9 Photography
Students recently explored a range of important issues affecting teenagers through a creative Digital Photography project.
Using composition, symbolism and visual storytelling, students developed their ideas and aimed to produce thought provoking images representing topics such as mental health, academic pressure, sporting expectations, bullying and cyberbullying, and the influence of beauty standards.
Some photographs include social media logos to symbolise the continued impact that social media has on many young people despite the ban. These images acknowledge that social media continues to influence many teenagers and forms part of the conversations surrounding their wellbeing.
Students were allowed to use their phones as props under teacher supervision, whilst taking the photos. I am proud of the maturity and creativity the students demonstrated as they explored these issues through photography.

Year 8 Visual Arts students have been developing their observation and painting skills through a monochromatic still life project, inspired by the work of Paul Cézanne. Students carefully arranged and observed everyday objects, focusing on how shape, tone and form can be used to create a sense of structure and depth.
By working with a monochromatic colour scheme, students were able to concentrate on the important foundations of painting without the added challenge of mixing a full colour palette. They explored how light and dark tones can describe three-dimensional form, create contrast and help objects appear more realistic. Throughout the project, students demonstrated growing confidence in their brushwork, tonal blending and ability to observe details closely.
The finished paintings show a thoughtful understanding of still life composition and the influence of Cézanne’s approach to simplifying objects into strong shapes and forms. Well done to the Year 8 students on their focused and skilful work.
Helena College proudly entered two talented student teams into the prestigious 2026 RACI Titrations competition. This demanding annual event challenges teams of three to perform precise chemical analyses, working to determine the exact concentration of an unknown solution. Achieving the required accurac, down to four significant figures, demands exceptional care, precision, and meticulous laboratory technique from every participant.
This year's competition took place on Tuesday 16 June, hosted within the undergraduate chemistry laboratories at Curtin University. Representing Helena College were Zac Alves, Dane Batchelor, Rivalee McEwan, Tammy Slater, Charlotte Walsh, and Stella Young.
Both teams demonstrated outstanding confidence in their submitted analytical data. Final results will be announced at the start of the third term, but regardless of the placement, the event served as an excellent opportunity for these young scientists to refine their practical skills.
The Science Department was the grateful recipient of a brand-new laser engraver from Mr Mark Frewing-Jones.
Mr Frewing-Jones is a local businessman who was kind enough to donate the engraver, as it was surplus to his needs. The engraver will be used to demonstrate how lasers work to students across year groups, with specific emphasis for Year 11 and 12 Physics classes. It will also be used in a variety of other ways, from creating materials for scientific experiments to labelling of equipment.
The Science department would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Mr Frewing-Jones for his generous donation.

ChemCentre High Achiever’s Excursion 2026
Four of our Year 11 Chemistry students - Kayella S, Chelsea S, Fife Tand Isaac V - were selected to participate in a Curtin High Achiever’s Excursion.
The students were given unprecedented access to the organic laboratory the ChemCentre, where blood and drug tests are conducted for the state. In the inorganic laboratory, scientists test samples of water, chemicals and soil looking for pollutants and contaminants. A particular highlight was the Emergency response team who work closely with the fire department whenever there are chemical spills and fires to determine the best way to neutralise dangerous chemicals.
They also met with the Hon Stephen Dawson MLC, Minister of Science, and the Chief Scientist of Western Australia, Professor Sharath Sriram, who both spoke of the need for more chemical scientists in WA. They also heard cutting edge-presentations from experts in Forensic Science, who shared some of the experiences working on cases with the police.
The students had a wonderful day and left very inspired for continuing their journey in Chemistry.

Interhouse Athletics Carnival
We are excited to announce that the upcoming Interhouse Athletics Carnival will take place on Friday 14 August (Week Four of Term Three term).
Preparation in PE Lessons (Years 6–10)
Before the Carnival, students in Years 6–10 will complete a unit of Athletics during PE classes. As part of this unit, students will participate in a series of pre-Carnival events that will contribute to their overall results.
Years 6–8: 400m, 800m, discus, high jump, javelin
Years 9–10:400m, 800m, javelin, high jump
These events will be completed during regular PE lessons in the lead-up to the carnival.
Senior Pre-Carnival Events (Years 11–12)
Students in Years 11–12 will complete their pre-carnival events during lunchtimes in Week Three:
Monday: 400m
Tuesday: Girls Javelini800m
Thursday: Boys Javelin

Year 10 Keys for Life Success
This term, all Year 10 students participated in the Keys for Life program as part of their Health curriculum. The program provides students with valuable knowledge and practical skills to help them become safe, responsible and informed road users before they begin driving.
Throughout the term, students explored a range of important road safety topics, including the Driving Triangle, the Fatal Five, hazard perception, decision-making, and strategies for reducing crash risk. Students also successfully completed the Behind the Wheel workbook, which reinforces the key concepts taught throughout the course and prepares them for the learner's permit theory assessment.
As a culmination of the program, eligible students sat the official Learner's Permit Theory Test in Week Ten. I am delighted to report that our Year 10 cohort achieved a very high pass rate, reflecting the effort students put into their learning and preparation throughout the term.
Students who were successful will receive a certificate from the Department of Transport, allowing them to begin the process of obtaining their Learner's Permit. This is an exciting milestone for many of our students and an important step towards becoming safe and responsible drivers.
Congratulations to all Year 10 students on their commitment and achievements throughout the Keys for Life program. I wish those students who have successfully passed the test all the very best as they begin their supervised driving journey, and I encourage them to continue applying the safe driving principles they have learned throughout the course.
Workplace Learning
Ever wanted to operate a forklift, design a water piping system, or build your own house? The Year 12 Careers and Employability students recently stepped into the world of construction at the Construction Futures Centre in Belmont, where they got to do all this and much more.
As Western Australia’s construction industry continues to grow, the demand for skilled, motivated apprentices and workers has never been greater. The Construction Futures Centre offers an exciting, hands-on introduction to the many careers available across the sector, giving students a glimpse into the future of construction.
During the visit, students explored a range of interactive exhibits, including a full pre-start and interior design hub, and experienced simulations covering every stage of the construction process—from surveying and drafting to project planning. They also tested their skills through immersive virtual reality experiences, operating cranes and excavators, and even trying their hand at welding in a safe, simulated environment.
The 90-minute excursion was packed with engaging activities that brought the construction industry to life. Students left with a greater understanding of the diverse career pathways available in construction and a newfound appreciation for the innovation, technology, and teamwork that drive one of Western Australia’s most important industries.

Outdoor Education
With Term Two coming to a close Outdoor Education is still a hive of activity. The Year 9s have wrapped up their semester of work by playing some canoe games down at the river, while the Year 12 canoeing/kayaking classes culminated their semester with a day paddling excursion along the Swan River with each class collecting rubbish and beautifying the river ecosystem.
The Year 11 class come back from their exam break and hit the ground running, already starting to prepare for their week long expedition to the Kalbarri Gorge next term. Meanwhile the Year 12s are finalising preparation for their expedition early next term with canoeing lessons and a day trip through the Swan Valley, with students getting their first taste of white water paddling.
