As Term Three draws to a close, it is hard to believe that we have already completed three-quarters of the 2026 school year. As is always the case at Helena College, the term has been a busy one, with students across both campuses taking part in a wonderful range of academic, sporting, cultural and community activities.
For our Year 12 students, the end of Term Three marks an important milestone in their Helena journey, with their final secondary school classes now complete. Our ATAR students have commenced their Semester Two examinations, which continue into the school holidays, before their attention turns to the external ATAR examinations later in the year. We wish them every success as they enter this important period.
Our General Pathway students have also been busy completing their final workplace placements. Workplace Learning provides students with an invaluable opportunity to experience different working environments, develop practical skills and gain a clearer understanding of the pathways that may be available to them after school.
Early next term, our focus will turn to celebrating the achievements of all our departing Year 12 students as they reach the conclusion of their time at Helena College, culminating in our Graduation Evening.
While the end of Year 12 is a significant moment, there has certainly been plenty happening across the rest of the College as well.
Our Middle School production of The Real Story of Alice in Wonderland was a wonderful evening and provided many students with their first opportunity to perform on stage. It was particularly pleasing to see a group of Year 12 students take responsibility for directing the production, giving them the opportunity to develop their skills while providing younger students with an authentic theatre experience.
At the Junior School, students have also had opportunities to perform and share their talents. The Dance and Music Showcase performances gave students the chance to showcase what they had been working on for their families, while Helena’s Got Talent once again demonstrated the wonderful variety of talents, interests and personalities within our student community.
Across the College, students and staff also supported R U OK? Day, raising funds while, more importantly, encouraging conversations about wellbeing and the importance of checking in with those around us.
Our Year 11 and 12 Media students showcased their creativity at the College Film Festival, presenting an impressive collection of original films to an audience of students, staff and families. The range of ideas, production techniques and approaches to storytelling demonstrated the considerable work that had gone into each production.
Sport has also featured prominently in recent weeks, with students from Years 4 to 12 representing Helena College at Interschool Athletics Carnivals. Regardless of individual results, it was wonderful to see so many students having the opportunity to represent their school and support their teammates.
For our Year 10 students, school has looked very different over the final two weeks of the term. Half of the cohort headed south for the Cape to Cape Expedition, while their classmates undertook work experience with employers across a wide range of industries. This week, the groups swapped, allowing all students to enjoy both opportunities. These are very different experiences, but each encourages students to develop independence, confidence and a greater understanding of themselves and the world beyond school.
Our Year 5 students have also enjoyed an adventure of their own, travelling to Fairbridge Village in Pinjarra for their camp. Camps are always an important part of the Helena experience, providing students with opportunities to challenge themselves, build friendships and enjoy experiences that are very different from an ordinary school day.
It was also wonderful to welcome so many grandparents and special friends to our Darlington Campus over three days. These occasions are always very special for our students and provide an opportunity for some important people in their lives to see and experience their school.
Participation remains one of our core values at Helena College. We want our students to make the most of the opportunities available to them, whether that means stepping onto a stage for the first time, representing Helena in sport, heading away on camp, entering a workplace or simply being willing to try something new.
There will be plenty more happening when we return for Term Four, so I encourage families to continue checking the College calendar, the weekly What’s On email and other College communications.
I look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday, 12 October.
Peter Coombs | Principal
Leadership
Head of Junior School | Greg Miller
As Term Three draws to a close, it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the many experiences, achievements and moments of growth that have shaped the past ten weeks. It has been a rewarding term, with our students continuing to learn, participate, challenge themselves and enjoy the many opportunities that come with being part of our Helena College community.
Across the term, our students have embraced experiences well beyond their everyday classroom learning. From Book Week and our Athletics Carnival, to excursions, sporting opportunities, Electives, performances, camps and special community events, there have been many occasions for our students to become involved and have a go. Just as importantly, there have been countless smaller moments each day - a new skill mastered, a friendship strengthened, a challenge worked through, or the satisfaction that comes from persevering with something that initially seemed difficult.
These moments are an important reminder that learning and growth do not always arrive with great fanfare. Often, some of the most meaningful progress happens gradually and quietly. As adults, we may notice a little more independence, greater confidence, increased resilience or a growing willingness to take responsibility. For our students, these are significant achievements and an important part of their journey through the Junior School years.
I would like to congratulate all our students on their efforts throughout the term and thank our teaching and Administration staff for the energy, care and commitment they continue to bring to our Junior School each day. I also extend my sincere thanks to our parents and carers. The support, encouragement and partnership you provide makes an important contribution to the positive school experience we want for every child.
After a rewarding Term Three, the upcoming break provides a valuable opportunity for our students to enjoy a change of pace. I hope there is plenty of time for sleep-ins, outdoor adventures, books, family time and, perhaps most importantly, simply having some time without a timetable.
When we return, Term Four will bring the final chapter of our 2026 school year. It is always a special term, with much still to learn and enjoy, alongside the celebrations, milestones and traditions that mark the conclusion of another year together.
For now, I wish all our students and families a safe, happy and restful holiday break. I look forward to welcoming everyone back for Term Four.
Warm regards
Greg Miller | Head of Junior School
Director of Upper School | Craig Hillman
It has been another jam-packed term in Upper School.
Thank you to all our students for your energy and commitment over the past ten weeks. A special mention goes to our Year 12s, who are completing their final Work Placements and Semester Two Exams. We wish them every success. We also look forward to welcoming back our second group of Year 10s from their Cape to Cape Trek on Friday. I trust their fortnight of camp and Work Experience placements was both rewarding and memorable.
Throughout the term, students in Years 10 - 12 have engaged in an incredible range of activities, including the Careers Expo, Outdoor Education expeditions, excursions, the Drama Production, our 2026 Interhouse Athletics Carnival, Alliance Française exams and language enrichment activities, guest speaker sessions, ensemble rehearsals, ACC and NIAS competitions, production rehearsals, Art Club, Homework Club, PERMAH activities, and campus clean-ups. A Family Information Evening, 2027 Year 11 Course selection interviews, the Winter Concert, Australian Mathematics Competition, Parent-Student-Teacher conferences, Languages Week, Science Week, and the EV Challenge have provided further opportunities for students to learn, connect, and extend themselves beyond the classroom.
Alongside these, we have seen Year 12 Homeroom Dinners, two Casual Dress Days, the Year 12 Media Showcase, the Write a Book in a Day competition, a Staff vs Year 12 Netball Game, the Year 12 Food Science students preparing the Parent Dinner, PE ATAR Practical Exams, student leadership meetings, academic support sessions, Upper School Assemblies, and the Whole School Bullying. No Way! Assembly, which provides further opportunities for students to develop their skills, strengthen relationships and reflect on their growth.
While staff work hard to organise and lead these programs, they would not be possible without our families’ ongoing support. Thank you for the encouragement, organisation, logistics, and the taxi services you so generously provide, ensuring our students can participate fully in the rich student experience at the College.
As we head into the holidays, I encourage families to make time for conversations about life after school. Exploring upcoming careers events together and beginning discussions about post-school pathways can be both challenging and rewarding. This newsletter details many upcoming events.
Several significant events mark the end of Year 12 next term. Our Year 12s will have their final year-group meeting during Homeroom on Monday, 12 October, to cover timings, reminders, and preparations for the busy week of activities that lie ahead. All the details can be found in the 2026 End of Year arrangements document via my.helena>Year 12 Parents and Students Communications page>Files> 2026 End of year arrangements.
With so much achieved this term, the upcoming break is well deserved. I hope all students, families, and staff enjoy a chance to rest and recharge. I look forward to seeing you all back on deck on Monday, 12 October.
Uniform reminder. Short, Skirt, and Dress length
While the College values high uniform standards, it is undesirable to commit an excessive amount of time and resources to enforce this policy at the expense of our core business, which is student learning. To this end, parental and student support is imperative for the College to maintain the uniform standards detailed in our Uniform Policy.
This is a timely reminder for students and parents/guardians that the specified skirt/dress/shorts length should be just on top of the knee.
Please use this holiday break to amend the skirt/dress/ length if required. Don’t get caught short.

2026 Graduation Update
The Year 12 Graduation ceremony will be held at the Glen Forrest Campus gymnasium on Friday, 23 October 2026. Graduation is the Year 12 students' formal conclusion to their years at Helena College. It is an evening for Year 12 students, their families, and teachers to celebrate collective academic, leadership and effort achievements from across this year.
We are confident the evening will be enjoyable and memorable for the Graduates and their families. We look forward to a wonderful evening and to celebrating with our 2026 Leavers and their families.
Class of 2026 | Email Addresses
Year 12s are encouraged to set up a new email address before the Helena address is turned off following the last ATAR exam in November. It is also wise to choose a professional address. This will help students represent themselves at their best when dealing with potential employers.
Transferring login details from third-party providers, such as Spotify, Google, SCSA, and TISC, can take time. Year 12s are encouraged to start this process early to avoid being locked out down the track.

Child Safe
Child Safe | Digital Safety
Thank you to all the parents who attended last week’s Digital Safety session.
The ySafe presenter, Patrick, covered a number of important topics, including a quick intro to the latest slang, some insight into social media and popular apps, coping with ‘pester power’ and plenty more. One of the key takeaways was the ABCs of online safety at home: Access, Boundaries, and Communication.
Following the simple ABC model will help ensure your child has a positive experience when navigating social media apps and online games:
Safe Access: Ensure your child’s apps and games are age-appropriate and secure.
Clear Boundaries: Set rules and expectations together so everyone is on the same page.
Open Communication: Stay interested in your child's online experiences and encourage them to talk to you about their concerns so they know they can come to you for help.
One of the resources mentioned in the session was the College’s Cybersafety Hub. The Hub brings together the insights of the world’s most respected online safety experts. Parents will find a rich library of helpful resources, including app reviews, how-to guides and advice on an array of online safety topics. Further information on all the topics discussed at the presentation are available on the Cybersafety Hub.
This resource is provided to all members of the Helena College community - parents, students and teachers. No log in is required. The link is available HERE, and is accessible from every page of the College website, and can also be found on my.helena.
Follow up Questions
After the presentation, a few parents asked for information on parental controls and internet filtering on the school-provided laptops when children are online at home. Internet filtering is used to control access to online content. It is implemented through software that scans websites and blocks restricted or inappropriate content. There are many benefits including protecting children from online dangers, limiting distracting content, blocking pop-ups and other ads, and managing online interactions.
We do encourage parents to consider a home-based internet filtering software, such as Qustodio. Qustodio works on Apple, Windows and Android technology. While internet filtering is a crucial component of many parental control tools, it's not the whole story. Parental control software, like Qustodio, not only filters web content but also provides additional features to help parents manage and monitor screen time and device use. Some of these tools can even track the location of your child's device, monitor their online behaviour, and restrict certain device features, such as the camera or microphone.
Once you have purchased your home internet filtering package from you preferred supplier, please contact IT Support at itsupport@helena.wa.edu.au to arrange for the software to be installed on your child's school-owned laptop. You will need to provide the relevant log in details for the product to the IT team to enable them to activate it. Once this is done, you can manage home internet access directly through your package.

Year 4 and 5 Class Placements | 2026
Looking ahead to 2027, there will be two classes at both Year 4 and Year 5. As part of our planning for the new school year, careful consideration will be given to the composition of each class, with the wellbeing, learning and social needs of all students in mind. Families are welcome to view the following document for further information about the class placement process.
Personal Belongings at School
As a general reminder, students are asked to leave personal belongings and toys at home unless they have been specifically requested or approved as part of a classroom or school activity.
Bringing personal items to school can sometimes result in belongings becoming lost, damaged or distracting for students. Importantly, families are also asked to ensure that children do not bring inappropriate or potentially unsafe items to school, including items that are not suitable or appropriate for a school environment.
We encourage families to have a quick conversation with their child about what they are bringing to school and, particularly with our younger students, to periodically check school bags together.
Thank you for helping us maintain a positive learning environment for all students.
Parking
As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering a respectful and safe environment for both our school and the wider neighbourhood, we kindly remind all families to adhere to local Shire parking regulations.
As a reminder, please do not park on the footpath along the school’s perimeter, as this creates difficulties for parents, pedestrians, other road users and neighbours alike. By parking in / using designated areas, we can further the safety of our students and maintain positive relationships with all community members. For additional details, please click here.

The Year Five students have completed their ‘Book in a Box’ projects. They were they were tasked with decorating a box to represent a book of their choice and filling it with objects that represented important parts of the story. We have really enjoyed displaying the students’ work over the past week, and fellow students, staff and parents have all been blown away by the students’ efforts. Helena College on the podium at IPSHA Athletics Carnival
Our Year 3 to 6 athletics team delivered an outstanding performance at the recent IPSHA Interschool Carnival hosted by All Saints’ College, securing a fantastic 2nd place overall.
It was a day filled with sportsmanship, determination, and community spirit, with every student giving their absolute best across track and field events.
A standout highlight of the day came from Rio S (Year 6), who delivered a breathtaking performance in the field to shatter a long-standing IPSHA Interschool Long Jump record! Rio's remarkable achievement set the standard for what proved to be an unforgettable day for Helena sport.
Beyond the record books, the true victory was the grit and encouragement displayed by every single competitor wearing the Helena colors. From the opening sprints to the final relays, our students represented the College with pride and energy.
A huge thank you goes out to Mr Daniel Griffiths (newly appointed PE teacher at the Junior School) and the staff members who attended, organised, and coached. Your passion and commitment truly make athletics come alive at Helena College! Congratulations to all our young athletes on an incredible result.

Junior School Dance Showcase | Peter Pan
Last Friday evening, our Elective Dance students from Pre-primary through to Year 5 lit up the stage with a magical performance of Peter Pan.
Under the expert direction of Miss Mersades, our Dance teacher, the students brought this much-loved story to life through colour, creativity, movement and flair. The special Showcase format, featuring two back-to-back performances, allowed even more families to enjoy the evening and celebrate the students’ achievements.
Productions like this take incredible dedication, energy and teamwork, and we are incredibly proud of every student who took part. From learning choreography and rehearsing their routines to performing confidently on stage, our dancers demonstrated enthusiasm, commitment and a wonderful sense of achievement.
A special thank you to Miss Mersades for her creativity, passion and dedication in bringing Peter Pan to life, and to everyone who supported the students and contributed to making the Showcase such a memorable celebration of dance and creativity.
Music Showcase | A Night to Remember!
Our annual Junior School Music Showcase was a fantastic celebration of talent and dedication, featuring over 40 performances from our brilliant Year 1-5 music students.
From guitar and piano to drums, the students wowed the audience with their skills and confidence. It was a joy to see our young musicians shine on stage, and we thank our families for their support and encouragement.
The Helena College Junior School Music Program offers one-on-one lessons in drums, piano, and guitar, with 15 sessions each semester.

Pankration Day in Year 6
In Week Seven, the Year 6s teachers hosted the College's first Pankration Day as a way to consolidate student learning following their English unit on the novel Pankration. Utilising an interdisciplinary STEM framework, the event engaged students across culinary arts, design technology, visual arts, and dramatic performance.
Working collaboratively, student groups prepared traditional Greek flatbread and tzatziki, designed and constructed custom chitons, hand-crafted period-inspired jewellery, and wrote and staged theatrical adaptations of chapters from the text. The event was a resounding success, demonstrating exceptional student engagement, teamwork, and cross-subject application.
ACC Interschool Athletics Carnival
What an action-packed day at the ACC Interschool Athletics Carnival! After a long day of competition, our Helena College team finished an impressive 4th overall out of eight schools — a fantastic result given the strength of the competition.
The highlight of the day, however, was our Girls Team. We are very proud to have come home with both the Senior Girls Aggregate Shield and Overall Girls Aggregate Shield
This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the talent, determination and team spirit of our students. Across the track and field events, our students competed with great enthusiasm, supported one another and represented Helena College exceptionally well.
We also had some outstanding individual achievements with students in the Top 5 Champions for their respective divisions:
U14 Female | 5th - Annabelle S (42 pts)
U15 Female | 1st - Niamh M (72 pts)
U16 Female | 2nd - Lacey B (55 pts)
U16 Female | 5th - Charlotte H (50 pts)
U19 Female | 2nd - Maddie P (47 pts)
U19 Female | 5th - Stephanie S (35 pts)
U14 Male | 4th - John O (35 pts)
U19 Male | 1st - Mitchell B (51 pts)
U19 Male | 5th - Kieren S (34 pts)
A huge thank you also goes to the staff who supported the team throughout the day, both PE staff and event officials. Your time, encouragement and assistance helped make the carnival such a success. Mr Bryce Gomes was also at the event getting some amazing photos - so keep an eye out for some snap-shots of the action soon!
Congratulations to all of our students — an outstanding effort and a result we can all be very proud of!

Outdoor Education
Outdoor Education has been a hive of activity to finish off Term Three. The Year 9 classes are in the final stages of preparing for their expedition, while the Year 10 classes have finished off their term with some more indoor rock climbing and some more challenging abseiling including an overhang abseil.
Next up the Year 11 class recently took on the challenge of hiking the Kalbarri Gorge, a gruelling 30km hike completely off track and off grid, camping at wilderness locations along the Murchison River. Lastly, the Year 12s are finishing off their time in Outdoor Education by completing a seven-session leads climbing course at the indoor climbing gym.
Well done to all involved!
Cape to Cape
The Year 10s spent the final two weeks of Term Three undertaking two unique challenges: one week of work experience and one week hiking the Cape to Cape.
The Week Nine Cape to Cape students were lucky enough to experience perfect weather throughout the week while taking on the 45km hike between Redgate Beach and Cosy Corner. With picturesque views along the coast, some whale spotting, cooking damper in the Bornaup forest and even a teacher kissing a dead fish, it was a great week for all.
Meanwhile Week Ten Cape to Cape students had the looming threat of rain all week but still managed to have a great week. We look forward to welcoming them home on Friday
Well done to the Year 10s!
