In the blink of an eye, we have reached the middle of the 2025 school year and, as always, the end of the semester is a busy time for students and teachers alike, with exams, assessments, and reports all needing to be completed.
Junior School families will notice some changes to the appearance of report cards this semester. While the information being shared remains the same, including details of each child’s achievements towards learning goals and their learning behaviours in each subject, the overall look of the reports has been updated to align with the Senior School format. Reports will be available for parents to access via my.helena on Friday.
We wish our group of Senior School students all the best as they head off on a Ski Trip to Mount Hotham over the holiday break. For some, this will be the excitement of seeing snow for the very first time, as they learn to ski and snowboard. A heartfelt thank you goes to the four staff members who will be accompanying and supporting the students during the trip.
This semester, we have finalised details for the new Maali House. More than 100 students have already volunteered to join Maali next year, and we will be in touch with families next term regarding the availability of the new purple house shirts. If your child would like to join Maali and has not yet expressed their interest, they are welcome to do so by emailing me directly. Alternatively, parents of Junior School students can email Holly Clatworthy at hclatworthy@helena.wa.edu.au.
In Term Three, the College will distribute a survey to families to gather feedback on your experience at the College. After conducting annual surveys for several years, we paused last year due to declining response rates. With the survey returning this year, I hope many parents will take a moment to share their valuable feedback.
As we come to the end of another busy semester, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our Helena community for your continued support and contributions to the College. It is a privilege to educate your children, and we appreciate the trust you place in us. I look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Tuesday, 22 July.
Child Safe
Head of Senior School | Justin Pitt
At Helena College we are always looking for continuous improvement when implementing the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations as part of our ongoing responsibility to keep children and young people safe.
Helana College Cyber Safety Day - National Principle 3
In our organisation we are committed to informing and involving families and communities in promoting child safety and wellbeing. Looking ahead to next term, the College will be holding a Y-safe cyber safety day with workshops for staff, students and parents. More information and booking information for the parent session will come out next term. These sessions for parents can be very useful as we navigate the ever-changing digital world.
A reminder to all parents as we come to the Semester break, that the Helena College Cyber Safety Hub has lots of useful parent information on keeping young people safe online.
Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable Semester Break.
Leadership
Director of Upper School | Craig Hillman
What a big Term Two it has been in Upper School
It has been another very busy term in the Upper School.
Thank you, students, for all your efforts throughout the term. Students across Years 10 – 12 have been busy doing, in no particular order, ESTs, work placements, exams, guest speaker seminars, student leadership meetings, excursions, expeditions, NEAS competitions and carnivals, ACC competitions, production rehearsals, ensemble rehearsals, our Music Carnival, the Winter Music Concert, drama performances, Art Club, Homework Club, academic support sessions, a Titrations competition, a casual dress day, tree planting, 2026 university applications, scholarship applications, a virtual assembly, languages enrichment activities, Anzac Day commemorations, DJing at the Social, pre-camp meetings, PERMAH activities, campus clean-ups, and tonight’s Senior Ball at Fraser’s in Kings Park.
I acknowledge that although these events are organised and run by staff, the support, encouragement, and taxi services provided by our families enable us to continue running activities that enrich the school experience for our students.
If you’re looking for something to do, and/or feel brave, I encourage you to take this opportunity to review the upcoming Careers events outlined below and start the post-school destination conversation with your child. These conversations can be challenging, but are also eye-opening and ultimately rewarding.
With all that has happened this term, the upcoming break has been well-earned. Rest assured that there will be plenty happening when we return for Term Three. Until then, I hope all students, families, and staff enjoy the opportunity to rest.
I look forward to seeing you all back on deck on Tuesday, 22 July.
Uniform Reminder
College Sports Jacket Please remember that the College Sports Jacket is not part of the School Uniform. It is part of the Sports Uniform and House Uniform and can be worn during Physical Education classes, House-based activities, and Inter-school sporting events. With the days now cold and wet, it’s a timely reminder to get a College Jumper or a soft-shell jacket to prepare for the cooler months that still lie ahead.
Black Leather School Shoe Remember that students must wear acceptable black leather school shoes before you head out to the EOFY mid-year sales. Our Uniform Policy states that the College expects all students to develop a high standard of dress. Please note that neither the Vans® style black leather nor canvas shoe, the Nike Air Force 1, Doc Martin Boots, nor a Mary Jane style shoe meets the high standard of dress expected by the College. Please keep this in mind when purchasing school footwear for the upcoming holiday break.

Years 11 and 12 Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences
In response to parent feedback from the last survey, we have improved College communications with families about their child’s achievement. In the Middle School, for example, we have held our Meet the Teacher Evening, and introduced Rubrics to remove written report comments on Middle School Reports.
We have traditionally held a ‘Making Sense of the Results Night’ for Year 11 Families after Semester One Exams. The messages shared that evening were general and had a narrow Year 11 ATAR focus.
To further improve our communications with families about their child’s achievement, we will hold a second Years 11 and 12 Parent-Student-Teacher Conference Evening. While the event is slightly shorter than the one held in March, it will follow a similar format. We will open interviews from 2.30 pm, and the last interview time that can be booked will be at 5.55 pm to ensure the night finishes at 6.00 pm.
The evening will give families of Year 12 students the chance to speak with teachers as their child begins their final term of formal schooling, and also provide Year 11 families with an opportunity to discuss progress and ongoing course selections.
Interviews will be FIVE minutes in duration. Students are strongly encouraged to attend the interview.
Please note that students will not be released early from class to attend interviews before 3.15 pm.
Interview times must be booked through the Parent Lounge, which will be open from 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, 17 July. A booking reminder will be sent in the What’s On message on Friday, 18 July. Those who do not book interview times are unlikely to be able to see the teachers on the night. However, they are welcome to email any teacher to organise an alternative date and time if necessary.
Year 11 Return of Results Day
Save the Date: Friday, 5 December 2025.
The school day will start with Homeroom at 8.40 am, and students will follow an amended Timetable for the day via my.helena. Attendance is compulsory for all Year 11 students, and they are to wear their school uniform.
The day allows them to check their Semester Two exam and overall year results and grades before heading off on their well-deserved holiday. Once students have signed off their results, marks and grades will be uploaded to the School Curriculum and Standards Authority.
Year 11 students will need to bring a day pack, a pen, and their laptop so they can access class resources on the day and follow their amended timetable. They will have access to their locker. The canteen will be open.

Head of Junior School | Greg Miller
Dear Junior School Families
As we reach the end of Semester One, it is an appropriate time to pause and reflect on the journey we have shared so far in 2025. This halfway point in the academic year offers a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the many achievements and efforts of our students. We extend our sincere appreciation to each for their hard work, and to our families for the support you continue to provide.
Semester One Student Reports and Work Sample Folders At Helena College, we value the strong partnership between home and school. We are proud of the academic and personal growth our students have demonstrated throughout the semester. The student reports and Work Sample Folders offer a comprehensive snapshot of your child’s progress - highlighting their efforts, accomplishments and development.
We encourage you to review these documents with your child(ren), celebrating their successes and using them as a springboard for reflection and goal setting, as we look ahead to Semester Two. These conversations help strengthen the connection between home and school, and reinforce the importance of student voice and self-reflection in the learning process.
Annual Student Disco Thank you to all the students who attended last week’s disco - and to the parents who made the evening possible. The Helena House Hall looked heroic, as did the students in their colourful and creative costumes - including many superheroes! The annual disco is a fun and vibrant way to mark the end of the semester, and we are so grateful for the dedicated support of our parent community and staff who helped bring this event to life.
Time to Recharge and Rest Amidst our busy lives, it is important to prioritise rest and renewal. The upcoming winter break provides a perfect opportunity for students to slow down, recharge and enjoy time with family and friends. Whether it is through creative pursuits, outdoor adventures, or quiet moments at home, we hope the holidays are a time of joy and balance for all.
Looking Ahead to Semester Two Semester Two promises to bring new learning experiences and opportunities. Our committed teachers have been thoughtfully planning a rich and varied program of activities that will continue to nurture every student’s strengths, interests and curiosity. From excursions and Electives, to carnivals and camps - the term ahead is set to be filled with meaningful and memorable learning experiences.
Staffing update - Semester Two 2025 We extend our very best wishes to Louise Selim, who will be taking a well-earned period of Long Service Leave during Semester Two. We look forward to hearing about her adventures and wish her a restful and rewarding time away.
We are pleased to announce that Jessica de Gruchy has been appointed as Administration Officer during Louise’s leave. Jessica brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of operations. Some of you may already know Jessica as a current Helena parent, and we are delighted to welcome her to the Junior School Admin team from the beginning of Term Three.
Wishing you a Wonderful Break As we wrap up the semester, let us take a moment to celebrate all that has been achieved, reflect on the growth that has taken place, and look ahead to the exciting learning still to come. Whether your holiday plans take you near or far, or simply allow for a slower pace at home, we wish you a safe, happy and refreshing break.
I look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday 22 July 2025 for the start of another vibrant term.
Kind regards
Greg Miller | Head of Junior School, Kindergarten to Year 5

Harry K | Year 2 - Cross Country Success
The love for cross country has struck a cord with one particular student in Year 2, Harry King. After a very successful athletics season, he wanted to keep up his fitness and be ready for when the season recommenced. He decided try cross country as he loves running, and he has flourished. Each week he's won a medal: placing 3rd in his first ever 1km race, 2nd in his second race and winning at Kings Park for his third race. For a Year 2, achieving just over 4mins for a 1km race, Harry is certainly a name to look out for in the future.
During the July School holidays, three students from Helena are competing in the State Championships in Calisthenics. They are representing WA in the Aus Cali Carnival in Adelaide. These incredible students have been working so hard all year, and we cannot wait to hear how they shine on a national stage.
The Helena community wishes them every success and looks forward to hearing about their exciting experience:
Evelyn R- Yr6
Abigail R - Yr8
Mia E - Yr10
Samuel E-S | Year 9
Massive congratulations to Samuel Elliott-Smart from Year 9 on his selection for the Australian u15 AFA Futsal Team heading to the Montesilvano Cup in Italy. 🇮🇹 This competition invites teams from all over the world. After much hard work and dedication, Sam gets to wear the green and gold and we are proud of him.
Arlo F and Jesse A | Year 8
Representing Helena College, Arlo F and Jesse A won their ESports Grand Final for Rocket League on the weekend. They played most of the series down one player (2v3), and won their Grand Final decisively 4 games to 0, in a best of 7 final, against other schools.
We were pretty thrilled to get a committed team together for the first time, this term. Esports is a fun way for students to connect on the weekends, and play their favourite sports games online. These tournaments can get quite competitive and emotions can rise when good players meet and things get serious! Students often have to show teamwork, camaraderie and strategy in order to succeed, in a similar way to traditional sports. Congratulations to Arlo Flynn, Jude Still and Jesse Anglin! They will be promoted to Division 1 next term and will have Charlie McClean as an additional member.

Parenting Information Article
Parenting self-care matters, by Michael Grose.
Parents are known for putting their children’s needs ahead of their own, and parenting author, Maggie Dent, says If we don’t care for ourselves, not only do we run the risk of parenting less effectively and compassionately, but we are not modelling self-care for our children.
From 30 June, there will be changes to the pedestrian routes between Midland Station and the temporary bus interchange to allow for construction of the permanent bus interchange.
What this means for students: The current walkway will be closed. Signage will guide pedestrians to the temporary bus stands via newly created pedestrian routes. Stand 3 will move slightly to the west. Bus services will continue to operate without interruption.
Click here for a factsheet with further information.
Students will have also received alerts via Transperth.

Grandparents' Day
What a wonderful morning we shared on Grandparents' Day!
The day began with the children showing their visitors around the room, proudly pointing out their artwork, learning spaces, and favourite classroom corners. It was a delight to see the smiles on everyone's faces as generations came together in the place where our students grow and learn each day.
Next, we gathered as a class and sang a song together. Following the performance, we split into small groups where children and grandparents shared stories about what school was like in the past. The conversations were filled with fascination, laughter, and the occasional surprise as students learned just how different things were "back in the day"!
We concluded the morning with a yummy morning tea. Afterwards, children and their grandparents took part in a special "favourite activity".
Thank you to all the grandparents and families who joined us.
This term has certainly been very busy for the Junior Sports program as you will see by the snippets below.
Next term, we see the House athletic carnival return to the calendar. Preparations will begin in Week One. We're hoping the weather is in our favour as we build upon our hurdling, throwing and sprinting ability as well as our team game skills.
Thank you for your kind and continued support with the sports programs at the Junior School.
Lisa Good | Physical Education & Health Teacher
Cross Country
We started with a different approach for the Junior House Cross Country, which gave Years 1-5 a new cross country experience. Smiles could be seen all round, despite their tired legs. Waughul took the House Shield, with many determined students showing their running abilities, and also their sportsmanship and comradery with each other.
IPSHA Cross Country
The IPSHA Cross Country event was next on the sports calendar, fielding a determined team from Years 3-6. Considering we are a small school, we certainly stood tall amongst the IPSHA School competitors. Three quarters of our team from Helena College placed in the top 20, with each race having 80 runners. An amazing effort and result by everyone. A special mention to Year 6, Kirrily M, who came second in her event and Jenson C, who came 10th.
Specialist Coaching
Two specialist coaching experiences were organised for the last four weeks of the term. Year 2 and 3 were lucky to have Swan Gymnastics come to the school to teach them stepping stones to build up their strength, agility and balance. Lots of fun was had in the circuit designed workshops. Many students expressed an interest in Swan Gymnastics' school holiday programs running in July.
Year 5 were outside in all weather, learning about Rugby. The coach from Western Force provided them with the skills and knowledge to take their experience further. They loved the tri-tag games and have been buzzing after each session every week. Kalamunda Rugby Club is the nearest club to the school that provides the setting for their skills and game play to be further developed.
Library
Term Two was a busy term for us at the Helena College Junior School Library.
Our Library Ministers, Elly and Emer have been doing a fantastic job handing out faction tokens and presenting the ‘Book Chook’ Library Award to classes during the assembly. Congratulations to Term Two winners: Year 2, Kindy and Year 5M.
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge. The students at Helena College read 958 books… so close to 1000. Maybe in 2026.
In Term Three the Year Five students will be working on their ‘Book in a Box’ projects where they decorate a box to represent a book of their choice and fill it with objects that represent different parts of the book. I know all the students at Helena College are looking forward to viewing their work.
We also have Book Week to look forward to in Term Three, with dress up day scheduled for Friday 22 August. This year’s theme is ‘Book an Adventure’ and nominated books can be seen here.
Please remember that your child needs to return their books in their library bag on their library day. Thursday: Year 5M, 5C and Preprimary and Friday: Kindy, Year 4, Year 3, Year 2 and Year 1. We are also open before and after school on both Thursday and Friday.
Please also remember that your local public library is open during the school holidays with a huge range of print and electronic resources available. Happy holiday reading.

Year 8 French Café Excursion
- Bo A & Isla B, Year 8
Last week, the Year 8 French classes enjoyed a delicious outing to La Maison Saint-Honoré, a French café located in Caversham, as part of their current unit on French cuisine. Students sampled a variety of traditional treats including croissants, macarons, crêpes, and drinks.
This excursion complemented their classroom learning, where they have been studying different types of French food and learning how to order at cafés and restaurants in French. The visit provided a fun and practical opportunity to put their language skills into action—and to enjoy some authentic French flavours along the way!

Media
As the semester comes to an end, students from Years 6 to 10 have showcased their storytelling talents through an impressive range of short films. Throughout the term, they have developed their media production skills, experimenting with genre, lighting, characterisation, and cinematography to bring their creative visions to life.
The Year 6 students began their media journey by creating western films. From dusty standoffs to cowboy hats, their projects reflect an early grasp of genre conventions and cinematic flair.
The Years 7 & 8s created music videos, combining performance, editing, and visual symbolism to interpret their favourite songs in bold and imaginative ways.
The Year 9 students dove into suspense and horror, crafting gripping trailers that leave audiences on edge. Featuring eerie settings, ominous sound design, and appearances from the undead.
The Year 10s tackled the shadowy world of noir. Drawing on stylistic elements such as moody lighting, sharp dialogue, and iconic character, including the brooding detective and the femme fatale.
This semester has not only strengthened students' technical and creative capabilities but also highlighted their ability to work collaboratively, think critically, and express their ideas. We look forward to seeing what they’ll create next.
Helena College was once again proud to enter two teams in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) Titrations 2025 competition. The titrations is an annual competition where teams of three students compete against each in a chemical analysis to determine the exact concentration of an unknown solution. The level of accuracy required in this competition is down to four significant figures. This requires a lot of care and precision, on the part of the students, to ensure that they get as close as possible to the correct answer.
This year the competition was held at Curtin University's Chemistry laboratory in June. The College was represented by two teams made up of Year 12 students: Victoria B , Liam B, Sam F, Ben PM, Sam R and Luke S.
The team arrived at Curtin on a cold and rainy afternoon for registration, set up (which included washing all the glassware) and then a safety briefing. The competition started at 5:30pm and the team had two hours to complete all their titrations and their calculations.
The best part about this competition is that students get to experience the Chemistry undergraduate labs at Curtin and engage with current students about what university life, as well as the experience of studying science at that level, is all about. The facilitators include current students and lecturers who are able to give the students amazing insights into what lies ahead after school.
Despite the bad weather, all the students had a wonderful experience which hopefully has inspired them to continue with their study of Chemistry after school. We will be informed of the results at the start of the third term but, regardless, this has been a great opportunity for students to develop their skills.

Year 8 Still Life Paintings – Monochrome Studies
Year 8 students recently completed a still life painting project that focused on using a monochromatic palette to explore tone, form, and depth. Working with a range of provided objects – including bottles, fruit, a tea set, skull, mannequin, and shells – students created and photographed multiple arrangements before selecting their strongest composition to develop as a painting.
These artworks represent just a small selection of the many impressive still lifes produced. Well done to all students for their focus and growing technical skill.

Outdoor Education
It has been a busy finish to the term in Outdoor Education. The Year 9s participated in rock climbing and canoeing. The Year 10s paddling class was involved in a river beautification day trip. Year 11s had their first expedition and are already preparing for Kalbarri next term. And, lastly, the Year 12s are finalising preparations for their Blackwood River expedition, also next term. Well done to all the students involved!

Physical Education - Athletics Carnival
We are excited to announce that our Annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 15 August. This is one of the most anticipated events on our school calendar, bringing together students from Years 6 - 12 in a day of friendly competition, athletic effort and house spirit.
In the lead-up to the big day, students will have the opportunity to nominate the events in which they wish to participate. A Google nomination form will be distributed during Week One of Term 3, and we ask all students to complete their selections promptly to help with our event planning.
To ensure a safe, smooth and engaging carnival experience, students will be completing several pre-carnival events during their PE lessons before the carnival. These events will include:
Years 6–12: 400m, 800m, and Javelin (11/12’s to complete at designated lunchtimes)
Years 6–8 only: High Jump and Discus
These events will contribute to overall house points and allow us to run a more streamlined carnival program on the day itself.
The focus of the carnival is on participation. We encourage every student to get involved and contribute to their house’s spirit and score. Whether they are seasoned competitors or just giving it a go, every effort counts! Once again, the ever popular ‘have-a-go’ area will be available for students to have some fun on the courts.
We warmly welcome all parents, carers, and family members to join us on the day to cheer from the sidelines. Feel free to wear your child’s house colours and be part of the fantastic atmosphere that makes this event so memorable.
We look forward to seeing our students out on the track and field, and our school community there in full support.

Year 6 Basketball Slam
In an exciting tournament this term, Year 6 students had the opportunity to compete at the Year 6 Basketball Slam Competition. It was a thrilling day with lots of gameplay and action. We had five Helena teams competing on the day, with two boys teams and three girls teams representing the College. Out of our teams, the Pool B Girls team went undefeated on the day and were crowned the Champions. This team will move onto the State Finals, held at the Bendat Basketball Centre later in the year. Keep an eye out for more information in Term Four!
Cross Country
In Week 6, students from Years 7 to 10 had the opportunity to compete at the ACC Cross Country Carnival. The Carnival is one of the biggest on the ACC calendar, with some 300 students from across WA competing in each race. One of our Year 10 students finished her race placing second in the Under 16 Girls 4km Cross Country - a top performance in a very large field. Congratulations Holly on an amazing achievement. An honourable mention goes out to another one of our students, Hannah, who placed 7th in the Under 15 Girls race - also an outstanding performance in a big racing cohort. Our Year 6 students were also in action earlier in the term, competing with the Junior School at the IPSHA Cross Country. Well done to all students involved in representing our school at these events.
NEAS
It was a big season of winter NEAS this term, with students competing in the sports of Soccer and Netball. The Junior competition was a weekly competition from weeks three to eight, with the Senior competition being split into a hybrid model of weekly games and a three game Half-Day Carnival.
In less than ideal conditions on the carnival day, our senior NEAS squads (boys soccer, girls soccer and netball) competed valiantly and had some fantastic results. Our two girls teams finishing 3rd on the ladder, just missing out on the final. Our Senior boys soccer team went undefeated at the carnival, finishing 2nd on the ladder, earning them a spot in the Grand Final. Unfortunately, after a tough and hard fought battle on the field, a very late goal in overtime gave our opponents the win.
In alignment with the ACC Championship model, finishing in the top 2 in our NEAS competition will see the boys progress into the round of 16 elimination bracket early next term. This competition will see us up against the top finishers of the other ACC sub-association competitions in an elimination championship. Keep an eye out for more information early next term!
