At Helena College, student leadership is an important part of our learning program, offering students meaningful opportunities to contribute and grow as leaders across the campus. Stepping into leadership roles empowers students to engage actively in the school community while developing a broad range of valuable personal and interpersonal skills.Peer Support
An example of student leadership is our Year 10 Peer Support program which plays an important role in helping students transition into Senior School. Recently, the 2026 Year 10 Peer Support Leaders attended an overnight camp focused on developing their leadership skills and strategies for working with younger students. This training will be vital as their leadership journey begins on Orientation Day, Wednesday 26 November, where they will facilitate activities designed to help new Year 6 students feel welcomed to the College. Throughout next year the Peer Support leaders will continue to work with the Year 6 students through a program which also reinforces key values such as empathy, inclusion, and positive relationship-building. Thank you to Ms Lewis and Mr Hortense for their facilitation of the Peer Support Leader program.
Along with the House leadership and other ministerial duties, it was wonderful to see our Year 5 Leaders shine during the Pre-primary to Year 5 Orientation Day. These young leaders confidently guided tours for incoming students and shared their experiences of Junior School life with new families. Their commitment, enthusiasm, and sense of responsibility exemplify the confidence and independence we aim to cultivate in all Helena College students.

Year 9 Project Showcase
It was a pleasure to welcome so many parents to campus for the recent Year 9 Project Evening. Families shared how impressed they were with the students’ presentations and the thoughtful learning demonstrated beyond the classroom. The Year 9 Project offers students the opportunity to design and complete a project of their choosing, encouraging them to develop new skills, communicate effectively, and navigate challenges with independence and resilience. This year’s projects were a testament to the creativity, dedication, and growth of our students.
A sincere thank you to Ms Rebecca Murray and to all the teachers who served as mentors throughout the year. Your guidance, encouragement and expertise were invaluable in supporting students as they brought their projects to life.
Leadership
Head of Junior School | Greg Miller
Term Four always seems to move at great speed, and this year is certainly no different! As we are in the final full month of the 2025 school year, I would like to extend my sincere thanks for your continued support, flexibility and partnership. Your involvement truly helps make us a thriving community.
Darlington Arts Festival (DAF) | 2025
What a joyful experience this year’s Darlington Arts Festival proved to be! Our students stepped onto the stage with enthusiasm and pride, performing with confidence and representing our College beautifully. The Helena College stand, and the wider Darlington Oval, were alive with colour, creativity, delicious food, handmade treasures and plenty of family-friendly fun. Thank you to everyone who came along to celebrate the arts with us. We are already excited for DAF 2026!
Drama Showcases | 2025
It was recently a spectacular week of Drama in the Junior School! Under the guidance of Mrs Brodie Bergin, our Drama Elective students brought a collection of skits and short plays to life - each performance filled with humour, expression and stagecraft. For some, this was their first time performing before a larger audience; for others, it was another chance to shine as their confidence continues to grow. Congratulations to all students who shared their talents so brilliantly.
Orientation Days | 2026
This week’s orientation experiences were wonderfully positive. These events give families and students valuable insight into the warm, supportive environment we are proud to offer. While families remain a child’s first and most important teachers, schools help guide the next steps - nurturing learning, social growth and curiosity as students move through their educational journey. We look forward to building strong partnerships with our new families and strengthening the relationships we have already established throughout 2026.
Three Weeks to Go - Staying Focused
With only a short stretch of the school year remaining, preparations for 2026 are well underway. We still have many exciting events coming up, including the Carols Concert, ELC Christmas activities, Year 5 Celebration Evening, and several end-of-year experiences across the Junior School.
Supporting your child to remain settled, optimistic and engaged during these final weeks helps set them up for success. A few helpful reminders (for adults too!) include:
keeping to regular routines
prioritising adequate sleep (especially on weekends and Sunday nights)
maintaining balanced eating habits
considering quieter weekends to allow some much-needed rest before the holidays
focusing on quality rather than quantity as the year draws to a close
remembering that students will return in 2026 refreshed, more mature, and ready for new learning and consolidation.
Carols Evening | 2025
We look forward to welcoming families to our Carols Concert next Friday at the Glen Forrest Campus (GFC) oval on 28 November 2025. Please check previous emails for full event details. It promises to be a joyful community occasion!
Wishing everyone a restful and enjoyable weekend as we move closer to the festive season and start of summer.

Upcoming Webinar for Parents
How You Can Build Resilience in Your Child. November 26, 3.30 pm - 4.30 pm (AWST)
We're excited to announce that Elevate Education's next free webinar will take place on Wednesday, 26 November, focusing on ‘resilience’.
Elevate Education works with our Upper School students, delivering high-impact workshops on study skills, motivation, wellbeing, and exam preparation. By tuning into their webinar series, you will learn how you can help better support your children at home by reinforcing the skills they learn at school:
In this webinar, Elevate Education will be showing parents:
What resilience means, what it doesn't mean, and why it's important.
How to help build your child's resilience levels, both in and out of school.
How to help your child break their 'fear of failure'.
2026 Student Council Update
Thank you to all our Year 11 students who put themselves forward for roles on the 2026 Student Council. Congratulations go to the successful candidates. Unfortunately, good students with a lot to offer have missed out on Student Council roles next year. Whether students were appointed to a role or not, it speaks volumes about how our students perceive themselves and how we will continue to view them in our College, as leaders. We encourage all students to set a good example for their peers and others, to strive for their best, and speak up when needed.
We look forward to presenting our 2026 Student Councillors with their badges at Awards Night and working alongside them throughout next year as they help to enhance the student experience at Helena.
Class of 2026 Leavers' Jackets
Wearing the Leavers' jacket is both a symbol of belonging and a positive part of the Year 12 experience at Helena. The Class of 2026 Leavers Jacket is expected to be delivered in Week Two, Term One 2026. I want to take this opportunity to recognise the excellent work done by our Jacket Design Committee and acknowledge the time and effort they put into the design process.
Students will have their first name embroidered on the back of the Jacket – below the embroidered "Twenty 26 Leavers" logo. Students are NOT allowed to have a name or symbol embroidered on the jacket after purchase. Gear Up Promotions will again provide our jackets. The GST–inclusive cost is $140. In addition, an instructional 'care' sheet will accompany the delivery of each jacket to ensure it remains in good order throughout 2026.
All payments for the Leavers’ Jacket will be processed through the Front Office. Jackets must be paid for in full before they can be collected. The cost of the jacket is not part of any payment plan that has previously been arranged.
Please see below for the winning design.
Year 10 Locker Clean-out
Year 10 students are reminded that their locker needs to be cleaned at Lunchtime on Thursday, 4 December. As a result, they will not have access to their lockers after that.
Students are encouraged to complete this task progressively and not leave it until Thursday because that will overload the bins. Overfilling the bins at any time becomes an Occupational Health and Safety issue for the maintenance staff.
Homeroom teachers will check that lockers are clean and empty (no stickers, food, etc.) on Thursday at Lunchtime. Students can take their bags to periods 6 and 7 on Thursday. Students must turn their phones off on Thursday afternoon to avoid breaching our Acceptable Use of Mobile Phones Policy.

FIRST DAY OF 2026 SCHOOL YEAR - Monday, 2 February
Normal Classes commence.
Please support the College and aid your child's transition back to school by ensuring that hair, dress lengths, shoes, jewellery, cleanly shaved faces, and other uniform standards are adhered to. We have a smart-looking, comfortable, and easy-to-wear uniform, and I thank families for their ongoing support of our College's values and standards.
Black leather school shoe Our Uniform Policy states that the College expects all students to develop a high standard of dress. Please note that neither the Vans® style black leather or canvas shoe, the Nike Air Force 1, nor a Mary Jane style meets the high standard of dress expected by the College.
Skirt/dress/school shorts length While the College values high uniform standards, it is undesirable to commit an excessive amount of time and resources to enforce this policy at the expense of our core business, which is student learning. To this end, parental and student support is imperative for the College to maintain the uniform standards detailed in our Uniform Policy.
This is a timely reminder for students and families that the specified skirt/dress/school shorts length should be just on top of the knee. Please use this holiday break to amend the garment length if required. Don’t get caught short.

As we enter the bushfire season, the safety of our children - both at home and at school - must be our shared priority. This week at the Glen Forrest Campus we practiced our bush fire drill putting our procedures and bush fire response to the test. Practicing a bush fire drill is critically important for student and staff safety because it provides a rehearsed and organised response to a real threat. We encourage all families to discuss and put in place your own bush fire plans.
The Shire of Mundaring shire provides valuable information to the community on what to consider.
The College recently attended the Mundaring Shire's Bushfire Preparedness Workshop, collaborating with other schools and emergency services to ensure our Bushfire plan is ready for the upcoming season.
Bushfire Response Information for Parents
Our College has a well-developed Bushfire Management Policy and Management plan to ensure the safety of students and staff in the event of a bushfire or bushfire threat. We ask that you please familiarise yourself with the following key aspects of our response plan:
Emergency Evacuation to our Safer Place (during school hours)
If a bushfire threat arises without sufficient warning:
We will inform the emergency services we are moving to our safer place.
We will go to our designated Bushfire Safer location (Helena House Hall/Gymnasium).
We will shelter in place and will have direct contact with the bushfire control centre.
Please DO NOT come to the College unless specifically asked to do so. Unnecessary traffic may hinder emergency services and compromise safety.
You will be contacted via our usual communications including SMS.
In case of an offsite evacuation, parents will be informed of the designated pick up location. An offsite evacuation would only occur if sufficient time is available and roads are considered safe.
Pre-emptive School Closure
If a bushfire risk is identified in advance, the College may initiate a pre-emptive closure. In this case:
You will be contacted via our usual communication channels.
You will be informed of the closure date and the anticipated reopening date.
Please do not return your child to school until you receive formal notification that it has reopened.

Triathlon
Helena College sent a team to the 2025 School Sport WA Triathlon, and this year, more than 50 students self-nominated to represent the school. It was huge event with over 360 teams and 350+ individuals competing on the day across all ages. We had some fantastic results with three Top 5 team finishes and a Top 5 Individual:
Year 10 Girls Team: 2nd Place (Maddie, Charlotte and Fife)
Year 11 Boys Team: 3rd (Blake, Liam and Finley)
Year 9 Girls Team: 5th (Sarah, Darcy and Hannah)
Year 11 Individual: 5th (Jarvis)
Congratulations to all students who took on the course, to the students who improved their time from previous years and for some who took on the challenge for the first time. It was great seeing the determination, sportsmanship and perseverance from all our athletes.
Outdoor Education
As the year rapidly comes to a close Outdoor Education continues to be a busy place. The Year 9 classes have been undertaking some taster sessions of canoeing and indoor rock climbing. Meanwhile the Year 10 roping classes have finished abseiling by completing the 50m abseil of the main face at Mountain Quarry and are now participating in some outdoor rock climbing before their culmination day trip to Statham Quarry in Week Seven. Lastly, the Year 11s finished their first year of upper school Outdoor Education by completing some outdoor rock climbing sessions at both local quarries.
Peer Support Leaders Shine at Swan Valley Training Camp
In Week Five, our newly selected Peer Support Leaders took part in a two-day leadership camp at the Swan Valley Adventure Centre, where they immersed themselves in a series of hands-on activities designed to prepare them for their vital role supporting next year’s Year 6 students.
Across the program, students developed key leadership skills including teamwork, communication, empathy, and self-reflection. Through workshops and group tasks, they explored their personal strengths and character traits, practised rapport-building techniques, and learned strategies for dealing with challenging behaviours. They also worked through a variety of practical scenarios to help them understand how to guide, encourage, and support younger students in a range of situations.
A highlight of the camp was the crate-stacking challenge, where students climbed in harnesses and worked together to build the tallest, most stable structure possible. This activity required focus, problem-solving, and trust, and it was fantastic to see our leaders stepping up, encouraging one another, and celebrating each group’s achievements.
Alongside the formal training, the camp was also a well-deserved reward for the extra responsibility and time these students have committed to their leadership roles. Evenings were filled with laughter, shared meals, and plenty of opportunities to strengthen friendships and team spirit.
We are incredibly proud of the maturity, enthusiasm, and compassion shown by all students across the camp. Their dedication has set a strong foundation for the Peer Support Program in 2026, and we know our incoming Year 6 cohort will be in excellent hands.
